About Matthieu Godmé-Guillaume
Nestled between the Grand Cru villages of Verzy and Verzenay in Champagne is the new project of Matthieu Godmé-Guillaume. A passionate third-generation winemaker, Matthieu is dedicated to crafting cuvées that are pure expressions of the region’s nutrient-rich soils. Matthieu began his project in 2017 when he moved home to take over production of a few plots previously farmed by his father. In doing so, Matthieu has been able to farm grapes and vinify wines his own way, all organically and without any additives, all expressing great energy and mineral-density.
A passionate winemaker, Matthieu is perhaps foremost a conservationist – preserving both his family’s history while implementing new natural winemaking techniques in order to sustain the rich soils of their land over time. Matthieu’s primary focus is respecting the natural order of things. His vineyards brim with biodiverse life – vines surrounded by wildflowers, long grasses, insects, and animals. He farms with forward-thinking sustainable practices, and advocates for a “slow viticultural” process with the idea of protecting nature and all that it has to offer.
Matthieu carries these values into his vinification. He ferments his wines first in neutral vessels including steel and cement, and only uses carefully selected oak – often selecting the trees himself – during secondary fermentation. Base vintages are fermented at least nine months on the lees before they are blended with reserve vintages dating back to 2018, depending on the cuvée. Premier Crus are made exclusively from the current vintage and fermented first in barrels before aging on fine lees for at least 12 months before bottling. Across his portfolio, Matthieu creates wines that are pure expressions of passion and emotion, guided by the ideals of life’s simple pleasures. The end result is wines that are vivacious, vinous, and mineral driven, paying homage to the region’s deep roots and its bright future in the landscape of greater Champagne.
